Indian Navy News : On April 2, 2025, in a major boost to India's Aatmanirbharta in defence, the Indian Navy signed a Project Sanction Order with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited for the design and development of a 6MW Medium Speed Marine Diesel Engine under the Make-I category.
The agreement, formalized in the presence of Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, is valued at Rs 270 crore, with 70% funding from the Government of India.
The project includes developing a prototype engine with over 50% indigenous content and detailed designs for 3-10MW diesel engines.
These engines will power main propulsion and electricity generation for Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships, reducing reliance on imported high-capacity diesel engines from foreign OEMs.
This initiative, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance in defence, is set to strengthen India’s defence industrial ecosystem, save foreign exchange, and enhance indigenous technological capabilities.
